Lulu and 'dad' warm neighborhood hearts
OUR People page normally focuses on human beings. But it takes more than people to make a neighborhood come alive. Man's best friend is also an integral part of the daily lives of many people. In the New Century Jingting neighborhood of Minhang, Lulu is one example of dogs adding cheer and fun to the local scene.
Sit! Stay! Shake hands! Lulu, a toy poodle, executes her master's commands to perfection.
The dog is so famous around the neighborhood that her owner, Li Weiliang, is simply called "Lulu's dad."
It's not only neighbors who have come to love this two-year-old, who stands 20 centimeters tall and weighs 2 kilograms. The New Century Jingting neighborhood has been selected as an Expo visiting spot in Minhang District, so Lulu is often out performing her tricks for Expo visitors.
Li dresses up every day to await visitors.
Neighborhood residents volunteered their talents to present to those visitors, and "Lulu's dad" decided that he had to do something too.
So he dressed Lulu up and put his pup on the entertainment marquee. He had no idea at the time that Lulu would turn out to be such a star attraction. In fact, Lulu has become a big local celebrity.
Toy poodles are said to be among the smartest dogs in the world. That doesn't surprise Li. When Lulu was only two months old, the dog was toilet-trained.
At a young age, the dog also learned to accept food given only by her owner.
The dog's intelligence inspired Li to do more sophisticated training. Lulu rose to the challenge.
The dog will slaver at the sight of food but not touch a morsel until Li gives the go-ahead.
Lulu dances, retrieves balls, does acrobatic jumps and also plays small games.
Lulu's successes have spawned a new neighborhood zeal for dog training. Everyone wants their pooch to emulate the neighborhood's famous star.
No doubt a whole generation of Lulus is being groomed in what will be a local phenomenon to delight residents of all ages.
