Maqiao Town today

Of modern-day Maqiao Town, Shanghai people would immediately think of two things: tennis and dried tofu.

The ATP 1000 event held in every autumn at the Shanghai Qizhong Forest Tennis Center has become one of the biggest sport activities in Shanghai. Other sports facilities have followed, including tennis courts, golf courses, swimming pools and bowling alleys.

Dried tofu, however, may be more well-known among Shanghai people than Roger Federer. It first appeared in 1950s, and the bean curd quickly became a signature food for the town. Dried tofu is soft, with a light smoky flavor. When cooked with meat, the tofu absorbs the meat juice, making it both savory and succulent. Stewed pork with Maqiao tofu in soybean sauce is the most popular Maqiao tofu dish.

Maqiao is developing into a relaxing getaway retreat for downtown urban dwellers. Visitors can stay in quaint farmhouses and enjoy fishing, fruit-picking and even crop planting. The local cuisine uses the freshest vegetables and fruits.
