Market shifts its location

THE Xin’an Agricultural Products Wholesale Market, one of the biggest markets of its kind in Minhang, has moved to Zhongchun Road, giving the market a cleaner, greener environment along the banks of the Huangpu River.

The new market is about two-thirds as large as its predecessor.

“We reorganized the layout of the whole market and eliminated stalls not highly in demand, such as second-hand electrical appliances exchanges,” said Jiang Zhongde, general manager of the market.

The new market also has introduced a wider range of staples, vegetables, meats and fruits. It also comes equipped with a waste-compacting station so that the environment around the market can be kept tidy, said Jiang.

A fast-check lab for food safety has also been set up in the market to give customers confidence in the products they buy.

Meanwhile, the market will develop its own brands and establish an agricultural research center aimed at providing consumers with the freshest and highest quality products available, all at reasonable prices.

“In the era of e-commerce, we will also develop an online store to keep up with the times,” said Jiang. “We need to think in new ways about how to successfully operate a food market.”

Jiang said the biggest disadvantage of the new market is its location. For many, it’s not as convenient as before. Although a parking lot provides spaces for 300 cars, most customers rely on public transport.

Discussions are underway on providing a new public bus route to the market. A future extension of Metro Line 12 will also make access easier, said Jiang.
