Metro station to undergo construction
The Lianhua Road Station of Metro Line 1 will be demolished by the end of this month, ahead of reconstruction.
According to Shanghai Shentong Metro Group, Metro Line 1 is one of the most heavily used Metro stations in Shanghai, and its capacity and construction have failed to keep up with traffic flow.
The station will be rebuilt with larger capacity and easier access. The station currently had no elevator for the disabled.
It will be the first example of altering a subway station without stopping operations. The control room has been temporarily relocated. Passengers won’t be inconvenienced.
The station was built in 1996. The number of passengers getting on and off the subway at Lianhua Road Station hit 50,000 in 2016 and keeps growing.
There are 14 bus routes that stop at the station, but no pedestrian tunnel connecting the station to the bus stops. The reconstruction is part of a revamping of the whole business area. The new station will be directly connected to area shopping malls.
