Minhang serves as a global model for environmental efforts

RECENTLY, the United Nations Development Program, Environment Program, China International Economy & Technology Communication Center and Shanghai Environment Protection Bureau jointly honored Minhang District's "Ecological City Construction Project" as the "Demonstration Project of an Environment-friendly City."
The project is aimed to show the achievements of Shanghai and Minhang's efforts in environmental protection, and present itself as a national and worldwide model. Another Shanghai project that received the award was the "Low carbon Expo" of the Expo Bureau.
According to an official survey, by the end of 2009, the index point of water quality in Minhang District has increased continuously for three years; the rate of good air quality has been over 85 percent for five continuous years, and last year it reached 91.2 percent; greenery coverage reached 39.4 percent, and per capita green area of public places is 17.2 square meters.
From the beginning of its development, Minhang has already realized clearly the importance in establishing an ecological urban area in a city where industry develops very well.
And the key to good development is to carry out various environmental protection measures. For example, Minhang has changed its measures and attitudes in registration of companies and pays more attention in serving the local enterprises.
Local administration also opened a "green channel" for projects that involve upgrading industries, clean production and recyclable economy, which saved a lot of time for them in the registration. In 2008 and 2009, there have been altogether 142 projects enjoying the benefits of the "green channel."
The government also takes strict measures to limit projects involving high pollution and high energy consumption.
From 2006 to 2009, 267 projects of such kind have been vetoed.
In addition, Minhang also carried out the evaluation of businesses' environmental behavior to encourage enterprises to develop green production.
According to the results, companies of different standards will be treated differently by the government in various fields. With all these efforts, the achievements are becoming obvious.
In 2000, Minhang became part of the first group of "National Model Urban Areas of Environment Protection;" in 2006, Minhang was honored as "National Ecological Area" in 2008, Minhang became the experimental area for ecological civilization construction in the city.
The excellent ecological environment has already become a distinct green credential of Minhang District.
According to the Minhang Environment Protection Bureau, the following five years will be a very important period for Minhang's further urbanization.
And the key point of environment protection will be shifted from industrial pollution to residential concerns, such as traffic noise and pollution caused by the fumes from restaurant kitchens.
The environment protection policies should benefit all the citizens.
