Museum to bring wonder of space to earth

A huge spaceship-shaped Aerospace Museum under construction in Minhang will offer visitors an intriguing journey through the mysteries of outer space, using exhibits, videos and interactive experience.

Construction recently started on the 30,000-square-meter museum, which is located at the intersection of Puxing and Shendu roads in Pujiang Town. The museum is expected to open to the public sometime over the next five years. The 10 sections of the museum will include themed areas focusing on events such as a spacewalk and a lunar-probe mission.

The museum will offer the history of China's aerospace development and projects over the past 50 years.

The exhibits will be of great interest because they are actual equipment or realistic mock-ups, said Li Mingguang, a department manager in charge of the project.

To date, 37 of an estimated 56 exhibits have already been collected, including the Chang Zheng (Long March) 4B and Chang Zheng CZ-2D orbital carrier rockets developed by China.

The actual rockets are used to place satellites into low earth and sun synchronous orbits.

"They can be launched immediately after being propelled," Li said.

The fairing structure that helps reduce drag and two engines of the Feng Bao 1 (Storm 1) rocket also will be included in the displays.

FB-1 was a Chinese carrier rocket launched between 1972 and 1981, which was later replaced by the Chang Zheng rocket series.

More than 200 aerospace experts have been participating in the master plan for the museum.

Other displays are expected include the Fengyun series of satellites, China's weather satellites, Tiangong 1, a Chinese module for a space station in development, and Yinghuo 1, a joint Russian-Chinese Mars-exploration space probe, according to Li.

Visitors will be able to watch a popular 3D film about mankind's insatiable desire to explore space, which was a popular screening in the Space Home Pavilion during the World Expo Shanghai last year.

They will also be invited to embark on a journey of discovery by experiencing astronaut training in mock training facilities.

"Interactive activities will make the museum a fun place to visit," Li said.

The architecture of the museum will be as eye-catching as the exhibits inside. Supported by pillars, the structure will look like a giant spaceship suspended just meters above the ground. The building will be encased in glass.

A real-size, 50-meter-high model of a Chang Zheng rocket will welcome visitors at the front of the museum.

The architecture is a joint design by the Arata Isozaki Design Studio and the Shanghai Zhongjian Architectural Design Institute, following a global bid solicitation. Arata Isozaki is a noted Japanese architect whose works included the Shanghai Himalayas Culture Center and the National Wetland Museum of China.
