Museums planned to highlight culture

THE Minhang District culture and broadcasting administration plans to open 20 folk museums to the public to celebrate the colorful cultural life of Shanghai citizens to visitors during World Expo.

One hundred separate collections will be displayed and admission will be free.

The administration has started to discuss with folk object collectors how their prized items can be featured in the displays.

The comprehensive exhibition plan will be finished by mid April and preparation work is already underway.

According to the current schedule, there will be at least four folk collection museums opened in Minhang with free access before the Expo.

"It will be a grand exhibition feast for Minhang's folk collections," says Mei Guoqiang, the secretary-general of Minhang Collection Research Association.

"Twenty folk museums will be based on already existing family collections. The government will provide policy benefits and subsidies to the museums as well as professional advice," he says.

Display areas

Apart from these 20, facilities will be made available to highlight another 100 collections that have no permanent display areas.

Minhang Museum and Chunshen Culture Plaza have been designated as the two main exhibition locations and various cultural centers of towns and communities will also be involved.

"These 100 exhibitions will be focused on folk collections of Minhang's own items," says Mei.

"For example, ancient china wares, furniture from the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties and common antique artifacts. They're all very interesting and good to display to show real life for Minhang people in different periods."

During the exhibitions, special lectures will also be available for visitors so that people can get a further understanding of Shanghai and Minhang.

Several folk collectors have already accepted the invitation from local administrators and over 10 kinds of collections have been confirmed for exhibition, including paintings, currencies, letters of famous people and various tickets.

The first of the 20 is expected to be opened by the end of April.

Also, traditional folk art bases such as the Qibao Shadow Play Art Museum and Maqiao Hand-Lion Museum will also be recommended to tourists.
