Neighborhood event becomes 'stage' drama
A performance of "Demolition Disturbance" in the style of Shanghai Opera won plaudits from local residents in Maqiao Town in the Minhang District recently.
The performance tells the true story of how villagers agreed to demolish an illegal rooftop structure to solve the problem of poor drainage during a big storm.
It grew out of re-enactments of the event staged in village homes as a form of local entertainment.
Chen Meilian, an official from the local art and sports center, helped propel the story onto stage, drawing on local appreciation of traditional opera. He was helped by Ni Jinfang, a senior citizen of Maqiao who loves song and dance.
With the success of "Demolition Disturbance," the villagers are now keen to adapt other local village happenings to stage performances.
"They are drawing on themes like volunteerism and harmonious family life," said Jin Yan, office director of the Maqiao Town Culture and Sports Center.
