Neighborhood limits activity, hopes to win ‘quiet’ award
Many people in the district, especially older folks, enjoy group dancing or practicing taichi in plazas and neighborhood parks. The problem is that social activities can stir up a lot of noise.
The Yannan Garden neighborhood in Meilong Town has just implemented new rules covering outdoor group social activities. Dancing to loud music background cannot start earlier than 8:30 in the morning. Taichi, a quieter activity, can start at 7:30am.
The rules are part of Shanghai’s Quiet Neighborhoods competition. Four neighborhoods in Minhang have entered the competition: Yannan Garden, Hebei neighborhood in the Jiangchuan Road Community, Wanyuan City neighborhood in the Gumei Road Community and Jiangnan Garden in Hongqiao Town.
These neighborhoods allow noisy construction works and other loud-decibel outdoor activities only between 8am and 6pm.
The result of the competition will be announced next month.
