New airport bus provides cheap transit

A NEW airport bus connecting Xinzhuang Town with Pudong International Airport went into operation recently.

The No. 9 Airport Bus goes from Xinjian Road E. near Baocheng Road, and it takes about 50 minutes to reach the airport.

Buses leave from the town every 45 minutes between 6am and 9:30pm, and return buses from the airport run from 7am to 11pm. The one-way fare is 22 yuan (US$3.32). Each bus can carry up to 47 passengers. There are no stops along the way.

Passengers said the bus was badly needed. In the past, they had to take at least two Metro lines to reach the airport or call a cab, which is costly.

But the launch of the new bus service had its glitches.

“At first, it was hard to find the terminal,” said a resident surnamed Zhu. “They said the bus was at a crossroad of Xinjian Road E., but I couldn’t find it.”

A day after the new service started, Zhu said he wanted to see his son off at the airport. Afraid that they might miss the bus, he and his son went to find the terminal several hours ahead of time.

“I finally found that the bus was actually parked inside a public bus terminal nearby, and the driver told me that he wasn’t allowed to park at the crossroads as advertised,” Zhu said.

Minhang District traffic authorities said signs have been installed directing the public to the new bus service. After construction of the Xinzhuang Metro Station is completed, its terminal will be moved to a bus hub on the north square of the station.
