New bridge offers major advantages

MINPU Bridge (pictured right), the cable-stayed bridge with dual-level highway, was opened to traffic at the beginning of January.

It's a combination of several world records of bridge construction, including the largest span and the thickest cable.

The entire length of the bridge extends 3,982.7 meters, with the main bridge 1,212 meters and the largest span 708 meters.

The upper level of the bridge is one part of the A15 Highway with eight lanes, whose design car speed is 120 kilometers per hour, and the lower level has six lanes.

The main tower of the bridge is in the shape of the letter "H," and the height is 210 meters.

As the eighth bridge across the Huangpu River, it was not supposed to be a big deal for Shanghai people as citizens have got used to hearing about new bridges.

However apart from so many world records, its significance has grabbed people's attention.

This includes that from now on, people in Shanghai can get to Zhejiang Province much more conveniently.

Take Huzhou as an example.

Previously, it took about two hours to drive to this historical city but after Minpu Bridge and the related Shenjiahu Highway are in use, the time will be shortened to about 50 minutes.

"It will not be the last bridge on Huangpu River," said Yang Zhifang, director of Shanghai Metro Plan Institute.

"We'll build more, but the detailed information is not known now," Yang added.

Actually, just before the World Expo, there will be another bridge -- Minpu No. 2 Bridge is being built and that's also a dual-level bridge.

The upper level will be highway, and the lower will be a part of Metro Line 5.
