New buildings will help workers' problems

THE 10 residential buildings for migrant workers being built by the Minhang District government are well on the way and the 238,000-square-meter project will be completed shortly.

The residences are being built in Zhuanqiao Town, Pujiang Town and the Xinzhuang Industrial Zone and will solve many of the problems of workers' accommodation around the district.

Last year, the local government spent more than 80 million yuan (US$11.7 million) on 10 projects to help its community.

The district dismantled illegal structures covering 1.97 million square meters last year. It disciplined the owners of 1,779 units where too many people were sharing apartments, and banned 4,094 illegal taxis.

The government also closed 423 unlicensed hairdressing and beauty salons, and bath and foot massage centers.

To improve security, 2,399 electronic anti-theft doors were installed and 102 security centers were set up.

With the establishment of a mediation system, the success rate of mediation in the district reached 64.5 percent last year. The public mediation offices at local courts helped deal with civil cases, handling 27.7 percent of the courts' cases.

In 2009, the targets for public improvement will center on security at communities, the establishment of the homes for migrant workers, the removal of illegal structures and handling unlicensed shops.
