New buses to add convenience and help ease traffic congestion
A new rapid-transit bus system is expected to go into operation next year linking Minhang, Fengxian and Pudong districts — the first of its kind in Shanghai.
The system, spanning 33.5 kilometers, will run from Nanfeng Highway and Xianpu, Nanhanggang and Puxing roads to the Oriental Sports Center in Pudong. Its Minhang leg will mainly pass through the towns of Pujiang and Pujin.
Residents have expressed concern that the new system might add pressure to the Dajiao Road and Shendu Highway stations of Metro Line 8. The two stations on Puxing Road are already packed during commute hours. Puxing Road is initially part of the new system.
Yang Demei, deputy director of the district, said the system eventually will go along Puye Road, easing the burden on Metro line stations.
“The system will feature many stops to give convenience to residents,” said Yang. “And because of its large capacity, all of public transport will benefit.”
Apart from the new system, public transport will also be improved in Maqiao. After the opening of the new Maqiao Daju Apartment Complex, residents complained about traffic on Kunyang and Huaning roads during rush hours. The complex is due to expand to even more residents next year.
Yang said there will be two new bus routes going through the area by the end of the year.
Shanghai Bus No. 2 and No. 4 companies, the two main operators of buses in Minhang, will publish the information on changes on the Shanghai Bus app on mobile devices soon.
Commuters will be able to check the arrival time of buses and the basic road conditions of the route on the app, said the companies.
