New center to promote development of consoles
A new industrial center for electronic games makers opened in Minhang this month, with companies such as Japan-based Sega and South Korea’s Blueside expressing intentions to set up operations there.
The center, located in the Zizhu National High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, will manufacture domestic games and introduce imported games to fit consoles such as Microsoft’s Xbox and Sony’s PlayStation.
An anchor of the center is BesTV, a Chinese leader in multimedia. It has established a joint venture with Microsoft called Shanghai E-home Information Technology Co to support Xbox services in China.
Dealership rights
In its soon-to-be-completed merger with Shanghai Oriental Pearl Co, BesTV will also obtain dealership rights to PlayStation in China.
“Minhang is one of the most significant bases for our future development,” said Ling Gang, president of BesTV. “It will help us in games production, operations and sales.”
The center will also provide research and development facilities, logistical support and professional training to companies at the site.
China is playing catch-up in the game console space. In the 1990s, the central government banned sales of consoles on the mainland, saying they were a bad influence on children. The ban led to widespread smuggling and pirating of foreign-made products.
The prohibition was lifted last year in the new Shanghai Free Trade Zone, allowing PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita to enter the mainland market. Genuine games in Mandarin are now available.
