AS a branch of the famous Grand Theater, the Qibao Grand Theater was formally opened on October 28 allowing Minhang residents another chance to enjoy movies in the local area.
Located in the Jiamao Shopping Mall on Qixin Road and occupying about 1,500 square meters, the new cinema has four movie screens with 562 seats. All the video and audio facilities are of the highest level, and all the seats are designed ergonomically to make audiences feel comfortable.
In the future, the cinema will hold movie premieres and invite some movie stars to address the audience. And best of all, prices at this cinema will be slightly lower than cinemas of similar quality.
Qibao's finest food
Plain sliced lamb, sweet Haitang cake, delicious steamed crab meat dumpling ... among all the special snacks of Qibao Old Street, which one is the most popular among visitors? In September and October, Qibao Old Street got experts and visitors to vote and comment on their favorites, with dry-cooked dumpling winning first prize.
All the food involved in the selection was judged on several aspects including appearance and taste.
"It's pretty hard to really judge which one is the best, because I think every one is the best," said one local administration official. "We just want to display the features and tastes of Qibao through this selection."
Employee center
The employee activity center for Shanghai Jiuxing Market in Qibao Town was recently established on Xingzhong Road to satisfy the needs of more than 6,000 Jiuxing Market employees.
The activity center mainly consists of a library and a reading room, and the first group of books were donated by the Shanghai General Labor Union.
Migrant learning
More than 100 Minhang migrant workers have been selected as students of "The First Shanghai New Migrant Worker EBA Course" together with hundreds of other migrant workers from other parts of the city. During the course that takes place over three months they will have lessons in various elements of EBA (elementary business administration) including Principles of Management, Principles of Economy and Principles of Law.
The training course is organized by Shanghai General Labor Union, Shanghai Charity Fund and Shanghai Television University.
It's aimed to train a group of migrant workers to an excellent standard and then with their help improve the quality of Shanghai's migrant workers in general.
According to the organizers, after the migrant workers finish the course and pass the exam they can enter Shanghai Television University for further education. And every migrant worker in Shanghai has the opportunity to enjoy the free course as long as they are self-motivated and hard working.
Culture festival ends
The Eighth Golden Minhang Community Culture Festival was formally concluded on the night of October 26 at Shanghai City Theater.
During the one-month festival, the committee of the festival organized 31 grand cultural activities such as the tap dance invitational contest and Minhang chorus contest, and more than 2,700 small and medium-sized cultural performances, movie displays and lectures also took place. More than 700,000 Minhang citizens participated in the festival.
Charity craft sale
A charity sale recently took place in Gumei Shuangyong Park, and all the articles for sale were made and donated by handicraft lovers from the local area.
The sale was organized by the Gumei Culture Service Center, Gumei Community School and 11 neighborhood committees in the Gumei area. A total of 86 handicraft works were sold during the sale, including cross embroideries, knitting works and cloth paintings. All the profits from the sale will be used to subsidize community residents experiencing economic troubles.
Help for hearing
Qi Ying Kindergarten in the Minhang District opened its "Charity Supermarket" to support children with hearing trouble.
As a semi-charity kindergarten, Qi Ying Kindergarten accepts a lot of children with hearing trouble. To help these children, the kindergarten collected donated toys and stationery and opened a supermarket outside, with all proceeds from the sale being transferred into a kindergarten deaf children education fund.
Metro routes
According to the recently publicized plan, the formal route of Metro Line 17 will expand from the Hongqiao Traffic Hub to Xinzhuang Metro Station. At that time, it will be directly connected to Metro Line 1 and Line 5.
In the future, there will be five metro lines crossing the Hongqiao Traffic Hub. Besides the current Line 2 and Line 10, which will be put into use very soon, there are also Lines 13, 17 and 20. And by 2020, there will be altogether 11 metro lines crossing Minhang District.

Recently, Minhang District and the Medical College of Shanghai Jiao Tong University signed an agreement on the construction of Minhang Central Hospital. According to the agreement, the new hospital will become the medical service center of the south-west area of Shanghai.
