New energy future direction for industrial development

THE new energy industry represents the future development direction of the low-carbon economy. To change the traditional model of extensive development to a modern low-carbon concept, Minhang in recent years has positioned the new energy industry in an important category to speed up adjustment of industry structures.

Now Minhang is the core zone of the entire Shanghai new energy industry.

The first solar energy pleasure boat --"Shangde Guosheng" -- recently had its maiden voyage on the Huangpu River.

Shanghai's Party Secretary Yu Zhengsheng inserted the solar energy controls into the boat, symbolizing the start of its World Expo voyage.

The boat is named after its producer--Suntech Power Cooperation.

As one of Shanghai's designated Expo vessels, it can automatically adjust the percentage of power use between solar energy and traditional energy for different weather conditions.

Compared with conventional boats, it can both save energy and reduce emissions by over 30 percent.

Minhang's new technology applications can be found everywhere in the Expo site.

Whether it's the "Chinese Red" of the wall of the China Pavilion, or the design of the Shanghai Pavilion, they're all recent achievements of Minhang enterprises.

To fulfill the concept of a "low-carbon Expo," Minhang has encouraged its enterprises to display and practice their new energy technologies at the Expo site.

And all the events which reflect the Expo view of the future are also the engine for development of Minhang's new energy industry.

No matter now or in the future, the solar energy industry will always enjoy good market prospects.

Lot of effort

Just by realizing this, many of Minhang's grand industry zones have put a lot of effort into it.

Take Pujiang High-tech Zone as an example. It took on the project of Suntech's solar energy in order to promote the industry structure.

"The process of industry structure change will eventually fall upon enterprises, especially leading enterprises," says an official of Pujiang High-tech Zone.

"This is because a leading enterprise will promote the development of hundreds of enterprises in its field and push on the changes," he added.

In the plan for Shanghai's new energy development, Minhang elements play an important role.

Industrial zones such as Zizhu Technology Zone and Pujiang High-tech Zone have become the focal point for Shanghai's new energy industry.

In recent years, more and more grand new energy enterprises like Suntech have settled in Minhang.

In 2009, Minhang District started 11 key new energy industry projects with a total investment of over 3 billion yuan (US$440.5 million).

In May 2009, Minhang issued the Minhang New Energy Development Plan (2009-2012), putting the industry on the highest position above all the six key high-tech industries.

According to the plan, Minhang District government has carried out 27 supporting policies mainly focused on the research and development of solar energy, nuclear energy, wind power and clean energy.

It has also built research bases for new energy automobiles and intelligent systems grids.

With such great support and efforts in 2009, the entire income of Minhang's new energy industry reached over 10 billion yuan.

And it's expected to reach 15 billion yuan this year, and over 25 billion by 2012.
