New services added to redecorated library

REDECORATION of Minhang Library will finish by the end of this year and reopen to the public on January 1, 2010. Readers will then be able to borrow or return books at the self-service terminal.

To borrow a book, readers just insert the library card, and then scan the barcode of the book in the machine.

The machine offers service around the clock. Readers just put the books into the terminal to return books; the machine will automatically scan the barcode and finish other procedures.

The newly renovated library covers 15,000 square meters and provides over 1,000 seats, 10 times the current capacity. Reading rooms feature books for children, general books, ancient books, foreign books and so on. There are over 300 computers in these rooms with free access to the Internet.

Not only can readers search for information online, but also read digital papers and journals bought by the library. Free access also covers the millions of digital books in the Shanghai Library.

Over 200,000 books will be added to the collection after the redecoration. In two or three years, the number of books will reach 700,000. Among the new books will be many foreign books and ancient books from Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties.

Readers can also get access to free services like printing, copying, scanning, and so on. To protect the environment, there will be an upper limit on copying and printing.
