Newly opened Pujiang park will help you escape to the land of fairy tales and miracles

If you are a believer in miracles and like to lose yourself in a fairy tale, then Pujiang Suburban Forest Park is the place for you.

Inspired by classic fairy tales, the park, which opened for a trial run in late July, has now welcomed over 370,000 tourists since the end of August, averaging at around 15,000 a day.

Entry to the visual delight is free, but visitors must reserve tickets on WeChat to visit the Miracle Garden, which is a must-see calling point.

More than 80 percent of tourists have made a special point of visiting this spectacular oasis on their trips.

“The most impressive landscape is the Castle of Flower Fairies. It catches your eye as soon as you walk into the Miracle Garden,” said photographer Zhang Yinan. “With roses and other plants climbing the walls, it adds color to the building and makes it come to life.”

Zhu Tieliang, manager of the construction program, added: “The inspiration comes from the traditional dreamy castle of a fairy queen that is often described in folk stories.”

Aside from the eye-catching gardens, there are 12 restaurants in the park and several recreation areas for visitors to enjoy. Changshou Temple, built in 1165 and now standing in Forest Recreation Area, is another impressive feature to behold, while parents and children can take time out to enjoy some amateur dramatics in the Forest Performing Art Center.

Pujiang Suburban Forest Park is several times larger than 140-hectare Century Park in the Pudong New Area and it takes an average six hours to tour the grounds. However, for those who don’t like walking and want to get around quicker, there is a bike rental service in the Miracle Garden. There are plans for other landscape areas to provide a similar service in the future as well as an intended miniature railway, according to the park manager.

Opening hours are between 5am and 9pm and, according to the park’s head of operation Huang Liming.

“More than a third of the tourists visit the park after sunset,” Huang said, as a caution to those planning to come during the peak midday hours.

The popularity of the park has put pressure on traffic around the area. And during peak hours cars have had to sometimes wait for more than half an hour on the nearby Shengdu Highway before being able to enter the parking lot.

The park suggests tourists visit outside of peak hours and it is planning to launch an app on Wechat to keep drivers updated about parking information.

Tourists using public transport are advised to change at Shendu Highway Underground Station for Metro Line 8 to Pujiang Suburban Forest Park Underground Station.
