One town willing to go the extra mile

Some 106 families in Meilong Town have received benefit cards that give them access to specialized services in some medical facilities.

The recipients are families with disabled children and parents who lost their only child due to illness or accidents.

The benefit cards are provided under the 鈥淟ove in One Mile鈥 program. It was initiated by the Family Planning Associations of the Minhang District and Meilong Town, in cooperation with the Meilong Community Health Service Center, Huadong Hospital and Tongkang Hospital.

Meilong has the highest concentration of families qualifying for the program in the district.

鈥淭he program offers 鈥榞reen-passage鈥 medical and mental health services to help create a better life for these families,鈥 said a health official. 鈥淲e are striving to come up with practical and effective solutions to the difficulties faced by these two groups of parents.鈥

The 鈥淟ove in One Mile鈥 program will provide comprehensive health care for participating families, including regular check-ups, counseling sessions and transport to and from hospitals.

The Meilong Community Health Service Center has formed a volunteer team to assist the program.

鈥淭he program is all about helping people,鈥 said the official in charge of the volunteers. 鈥淭hese families have experienced a lot of sorrow and misfortune, and we want to bring some joy to their lives.鈥

The 鈥淟ove in One Mile鈥 program was developed out of last year鈥檚 鈥淗and in Hand鈥 project in Meilong. Its reach extends to all sectors of the community needing help.

The town has long demonstrated its warm heart. It previously launched a program to provide bereaved families free lunches, family services, inpatient care subsidies and retirement support.

鈥淟ast year in a public survey, we discovered that some elderly citizens were not able to get to health facilities for treatment they needed,鈥 said Cheng Jianping, deputy director of the district鈥檚 Health and Family Planning Commission. 鈥淣o one was looking after them. We knew we had to tackle that problem.鈥

That was the impetus for the trial project that came to be known as 鈥淟ove in One Mile.鈥

鈥淲e do everything we can to meet the medical needs of these people,鈥 said Li Zhijun, secretary of the Minhang Youth League Committee. 鈥淭here are also fitness and recreation programs to help keep senior citizens fit and happy.鈥

According to the district鈥檚 plan, 鈥淟ove in One Mile鈥 has been so successful that it will be expanded to social welfare programs in other towns.
