Open-topped buses offer passengers a comfortable ride
RESIDENTS of City Garden in Minhang may be surprised to find a new No. 911 bus parked at the terminal. It's one of five open-topped buses added to the line recently and they'll soon be put into use.
The buses originally served on the Tour 1 line but after it stopped running some of the fleet were transferred to other bus lines, and No. 911 was one of them.
The No. 911 open buses are double-deckers, with 20 seats downstairs and 46 on top. The 20 seats below are of an aircraft style, some of which are even equipped with tables for passengers to use.
Passengers can enjoy the view from the top level, or a smooth and luxurious ride below.
When it's raining, a door between the bottom level and the stairs to the top can be closed so that rain does not leak in and beside the stairs there's a drain to channel the water.
According to a bus company official, drivers have been specially trained to handle the higher and heavier vehicles which are a little slower than ordinary buses.
However, the fare is no different, ranging from 2 yuan (30 US cents) to 5 yuan depending on distance.
Five open-topped buses will share the route with the ordinary buses. The No. 911 route is long and usually takes up to an hour. The experience could be very pleasant if you happen to get on one.
Although the new buses will give passengers a new and exciting experience, the bus company is concerned about passengers' safety.
For example, they are advised not to use the stairs or walk around on the top level when the bus is moving and never put their arms outside the vehicle.
