THE Hanghua No.1 Primary School has opened a class in Huju Opera as part of a school campaign to preserve the Shanghai dialect. The school has invited Yan Gendi, a Huju Opera performer living in Hanghua, to teach a class of about 16 students every Monday. Many children, forced to use Mandarin in schools, don't speak the local dialect well or at all.
