Orchestra hits 20
EVERY Monday, Wednesday and Friday, there is always a group of elderly citizens gathering in Maqiao Community Cultural Activity Center, playing various traditional Chinese instruments. Those people, whose average age is 75 years, are actually members of the Maqiao Traditional Chinese Music Orchestra. The orchestra has attained its 20th birthday this month.
At first they just gathered together and practiced for their own enjoyment. Later, when the local government learned about them, they got support and began to perform for communities. With their promotion and efforts, the folk music of Maqiao has become pretty popular in villages, neighborhoods and schools across the town. The orchestra now has more than 100 members, and they will continue to introduce their music into the lives of Maqiao people.
