Peking University picks middle school in Minhang for enrollment initiative

WHICH are the best four high schools in Shanghai as chosen by China's prestigious Peking University? Well, Shanghai Qibao Middle School in Minhang District is one of them after beating an array of local key middle schools.

When Peking University recently announced its selection of four local schools which are eligible for its 2011 nationwide recommendation enrollment, the inclusion of Qibao Middle School came as a surprise to many people.

The enrollment initiative authorizes presidents of 161 selected high schools nationwide to recommend 210 students based on their own judgments.

The students have an interview organized by the university and if successful can earn them 30 bonus points on the national college entrance exam. Qibao Middle School's qualification enables it to recommend one student.

Compared with the other three famed schools, which are Shanghai High School, No.2 High School of East China Normal University and the High School affiliated to Fudan University, it seems that Qibao Middle School doesn't enjoy a high academic reputation, it isn't famous and has no competitive edge over other key middle schools.

But check out the school's academic achievements and few people will label it as a dark horse.

This year, nine students from the school were admitted by Peking University through the national college entrance exam, and the same figure was recorded last year.

The number gave the school third place in Shanghai following the Shanghai High School and No.2 High School of East China Normal University, two of the city's best schools.

Shanghai Qibao Middle School also takes pride in its 99 percent undergraduate admissions since 2007.

Last year, 174 graduates of the school were enrolled by China's top-level universities including Tsinghua University after passing these universities' self-designed written exams and interviews to earn 20 or so extra points in the national college entrance exam.

Extraordinary academic scores, plus outstanding performances by the school's graduates on Peking campus, explain why the school was favored by Peking University, said Qiu Zhonghai, principal of Qibao Middle School.

From Qiu's perspective, top students are defined as "well-developed and well-rounded with specialized talent."

"When it comes to the recommendation, we will give more consideration to the graduate's potential with the expectation that a future leader or pioneer in a certain field may emerge."

Peking University's criteria includes comprehensive ability, noticeable academic performance, ambition, potential for future development and responsibility.

Shanghai Qibao Middle School offers a flurry of festivals every year, themed around reading, sports, thanksgiving, arts and science and technology.

"The recommendation policy gives more say to high schools, while the result is not in the hands of one person," Qiu said.

According to him, the right person must be first recommended by students and teachers who know the candidate better.

"The honor of the president is tied with the reputation of the school, which will ensure a fair and serious selection process."

Information about the student and the reasons for recommendation will go online and be posted on the school's bulletin for one week to make the selection more transparent and fair.

Shanghai Qibao Middle School was established in 1947.

The school now occupies 97,800 square meters and has a gross floor space of 65,000 square meters.

With first-rate teaching facilities, the school has 54 classes and about 2,630 students.

As of last year, there were 314 schools and educational institutes in the Minhang District, among which were two model senior high schools, one Shanghai model kindergarten and two state-level key vocational schools.

Also in 2009, the Minhang District invested more into education by introducing quality educational resources, achieving mandatory management, conducting cooperation between schools, promoting the mobility of backbone teaching staff and fulfilling a balanced development of education among regions.
