Physician donates stem cells to save a Beijing patient

A Minhang doctor recently donated stem cells to a leukemia patient. He was the 18th stem cell donor in the district.

Gu Hao, 41, is a doctor at the Xinzhuang Community Healthcare Center. A regular blood donor, he joined the marrow bank in 2012. In June, he received a notice that his leukocyte antigen had been matched with a patient in Beijing.

“This is destiny,” said Gu. “It’s good that I can save a life outside of my daily work.”

Afraid that the donation might fail, Gu changed his lifestyle. He quit smoking, jogged every day and kept early hours.

In the physical examination preceding the donation, a scan showed calcification on one of his lungs.

“I was really worried, but when I had the scan again hours later, it showed that my lung was in pretty good shape,” he said.

Earlier this month, Gu finally finished stem cell extraction procedures at Shanghai Huashan Hospital, where he remained for five days.

“I felt a bit weak afterwards but recovered very quickly,” he said.

Afraid that his parents might worry, he told them that his hospitalization was for routine tests. He said he didn’t want to make a fuss and just told his wife to take care of their 12-year-old daughter.

Gu said he joined the marrow bank to reciprocate treatment he received when he was young. In 1992, while still a student, he suffered acute hemorrhaging of the gastric tract and needed an emergency blood transfusion. A person unknown to him donated 600 milliliters of blood.

“I was very grateful to this stranger who saved my life,” said Gu. “And from then on, I always knew I had to return this anonymous kindness. The opportunity finally came.”
