Play gives tribute to post-quake spirit in Sichuan
THE Shanghai City Theater will stage a drama inspired by the reconstruction spirit after the 2008 Sichuan earthquake and an adapted version of Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew" in November.
The drama "Soul of The Riven Mountains" tells the moving tale of Wang Miao, a young man who left his hometown in Wenchuan County following family quarrels. Five years later, the earthquake devastated the county.
When Wang returns home, he sees his village in ruins and learns that his father, a teacher, died while trying to save his students.
Wang decides to stay and lead the villagers in the rebuilding of the town. As new homes and bridges are taking shape, a mudslide devastates the site again, delivering a heavy blow to Wang and the villagers. Inspired by tales of his father's selfless devotion, Wang mobilizes the townsfolk to renewed construction.
He unites villagers and exhorts them to stay the course and not yield to frustration or hopelessness. In the end, the village is rebuilt.
The drama was dedicated to the third anniversary of the earthquake and is being staged nationwide.
"I was deeply moved by the drama, wiping away tears as I watched," said Wang Fulin, chairman of the China Drama Art Institute.
The drama will be staged at 7:30pm on November 3 and 4. Ticket prices range between 60 yuan (US$9) and 180 yuan.
The adapted version of the Shakespearean comedy "The Taming of the Shrew" moves the setting from Padua to Shanghai in the 1930s.
Bai Kaili, an overbearing, headstrong woman, marries Pei Chuqiao, who believes that a wife should be obedient and sweet-natured. Pei tries various means to tame Bai, with hilarious results.
The curtain goes up at 7:30pm on November 11 and 12. Ticket prices range between 80 yuan and 150 yuan.
Also on tap at the Shanghai City Theater is a concert by the Seifert Quartet at 7:30pm on November 13. Ticket prices range from 80 yuan to 280 yuan. The quartet is comprised of four members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
The Seifert Quartet was formed in 1972 and performed at the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai.
