Police death case ends with a life sentence
A DRIVER arrested in connection with the death of a traffic policeman last year was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People鈥檚 Court.
The tragedy happened last march, when officer Mao Shengquan stopped a car driven by Sun Haojie for a traffic violation at the corner of Wuzhong and Hongxu roads in Minhang.
After receiving a warning, Sun, 32, cut across three lanes illegally to make a left turn, so Mao approached him again and signaled him to stop. But Sun did not. Instead, he stepped on the gas and tried to flee.
Mao ran after the car and managed to grab onto the door. He was dragged for about 10 meters before hitting the ground hard.
Rushed to Shanghai No. 6 People鈥檚 Hospital, the 32-year-old Mao died of a brain hemorrhage five hours later.
The prosecutors said Sun admitted seeing Mao clinging to his car door in his first confession, but later withdrew that statement, insisting that he had not realized that he was dragging the officer along.
Mao was a member of the Minhang Security Bureau鈥檚 Traffic Police Detachment. His widow gave birth to their first child just a month after his death.
The death caused an outpouring of public condolences.
Ye Ting, a friend and colleague of Mao鈥檚, said the young officer was a passionate car lover, which was the main reason he chose traffic police as his career.
鈥淗e chose to be a traffic policeman because he believed it was an honor,鈥 Ye said. 鈥淏ut he could never have imagined he would end up sacrificing his life for it.鈥
