Popular grave-robber tale thrills young theater-goers
Grave Robbery Note I,” a stage adaptation of the first part of the popular online novel “Daomu Biji,” is performed at the Shanghai City Theater through the middle of February.
The sprawling “Grave Robbers’ Chronicles” is a novel written by Hangzhou-native Xu Lei (Kennedy Xu) over a span of five years. It appeared online in nine installments, generating millions of fans. The story follows the grave-robbing adventures of Wu Xie, the descendent of a long line of family tomb-raiders.
Du Guangwei, the actor who plays Wu on stage, performed the theme song with a live band at the end of the show’s premier on January 17 and caused uproarious screams of delights from fans attending the performance.
The show closely follows the storyline of the original novel, according to producer Cheng Yu. And 3D technology is used in the production.
“Some dramatic stage effects and dialogue have been added to enhance the show,” Cheng said.
Last year, the production toured many cities in China to strong applause from the novel’s fans.
“We consider this a ‘new-style drama’ that appeals to young audiences,” said director Liu Fangqi. “It is rewarding that this production can turn many of the novel’s fans into theater lovers.”
The second chapter of the novel will be staged in July, and production costs will be triple that of this first production, according to the producer.
