Private art collection goes public
THE NEW Huapu Culture and Art Museum opened this month in Xupu Village, Huacao Town, displaying a previously private collection of art and antiques.
The museum is an outgrowth of the Wanqingtang Collection of museum director Si Wanqing, who spent decades searching for buying artworks and antiques.
“I moved my company to the village in recent years because I really love it here,” said Si. “And I thought it was time I do something to reward the people here.”
The collection includes pottery from the Song Dynasty (960 AD-1279), tableware from the Han Dynasty (206 BC–220 AD), and ceramics, jade and stone from numerous dynasties. It also includes more than 100 Chinese paintings and calligraphy works by modern artists, said Si.
In the course of his collecting, Si also gathered ancient agricultural tools and a large array of Indian spices, which are so far the villagers’ favorite.
“Opening up the new museum has been a great opportunity for me to reorganize my collections,” he said. “All the exhibits here are genuine pieces of auction value.”
The museum will also hold events to attract visitors. Currently running to the end of the year is a series of activities focusing on the culture of art collecting, on art appreciation and on calligraphy.
The museum is open Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 9am to 4pm. There is no entry fee, and guides are available.
