Private entrepreneurs brave risks to pursue business brainstorms
"AFTER failing several times, I decided to try look at jobs in technology-oriented industries because that's where the demand of the future is"
Xie Jinchong, who quit his job as a civil servant in the southeastern province of Fujian, came to Shanghai in 1992 to seek his fortune.
Today Xie Jinchong is general manager of the Shanghai Longguang Shenjing Lighting Technology Corp, which makes light emitting diode (LED) tubes.
He found LED technology after trying his hand at various jobs, including marble sales, property management and vehicle cleaning.
"After failing several times, I decided to try look at jobs in technology-oriented industries because that's where the demand of the future is," he said.
Underpinning his discovery was his training as a mechanical and electrical engineer at the Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University.
He turned his focus on LED, learning that its products are eco-friendly and durable. Compared with traditional lighting systems, LEDs consume only half the power of a standard light bulb and last five times longer.
To begin his new vocation, Xie rented a shop at the Jiuxing market at the Qibao Town in Minhang.
At first, he sold products from Guangdong Province, but problems emerged.
"It is difficult to control quality, and some lights broke down only two months after being installed, triggering a lot of complaints and affecting our credibility," he said.
Xie learned that only about 30 companies in Shanghai are engaged in LED research and development, so he decided to develop his own products.
He bought hundreds of components and tried different arrangements of chips to create variations of colors.
A year later, he set up his own factory on Zhongchun Road, dedicated to the production of LED products and their applications. He has aimed his attention at LED lighting for homes, businesses, electrical appliances and roadsides.
Lights made by his company were installed at the Nanfang Guoji Mansion in Fengxian, at the Huaguangcheng residential community in Minhang and along Hongxin Road.
During the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, his company installed lighting at the Sunny Valley of Expo Boulevard, which presented a bitmap picture of 16 million colors lit with rotating hues.
The company holds 12 national patents.
Xie currently doing research to improve the lights' abstraction of heat and waterproof systems.
"Without innovation, firms in high-tech industries will be wiped out," he said.
Xie is planning to cooperate with schools to replace conventional lighting with LED fixtures. It's good for the environment and good for students' eyes, he said.
His company now employs 100 staff, with an annual revenue of 50 million yuan (US$7.7 million).
