Promoting the dramatic arts
YU Qiuyu, a famous Chinese scholar, delivered the first lecture in the refurbished Gumei Community Cultural Activity Center, which reopened on January 5.
Yu, a popular writer on the mainland, discussed his artistic works in the public talk.
Located on Pingyang Road, the center underwent renovation for a year. It will serve as a venue for art and cultural lectures.
Drama is high on the agenda.
The Ma Lan Drama Studio, the first artistic workshop to be housed in the new center, will promote theater arts and give charity shows.
"I'd like to form a team of volunteer students and teachers from the Shanghai Theater Academy to promote drama appreciation among the public," said Ma Lan, founder of the studio. Ma is wife of Yu Qiuyu.
Ma said her team is selecting drama works easily understood by the general public.
Free show
More than 400 residents from the Gumei community were recently invited to watch a play performed by theater students. After the performance, the audience was invited to give feedback on the staging, acting and plot development of the drama they had watched.
Many in the audience said they were thrilled by the experience.
Qiao Yuanwen, a local resident who once performed at the Shanghai Theater Academy 50 years ago, said it was heartwarming to return to the venue. "I remember the old days," Qian said. "I am very gratified that I had this opportunity to return to the theater and see such an excellent show."
