Purple hues brighten rural landscapes
Minhang’s autumn colors have attracted many visitors, who came to view a field of hair awn muhly, a hedge-like grass, in the Pujing area, and a 35-hectare field of purple verbena in Huacao Town.
Hair awn muhly, also called pink hair grass, blooms from September to November, with feathery purple-pink flowers. To some, the loosely branched blooms look like floating marshmallows. In summer, the plants have green leaves and stems.
The pink hair grass grows on what was once a vacant field filled with rubbish. A year ago, Pujing decided to turn the eyesore into stunning landmark covering 7.2 hectares.
Zhaocun village in Huacao Town offers its own floral palette, with flourishing verbena. During work on beautification of the town, villagers renovated greenhouses and planted flower gardens. It hopes to become a destination for rural tourism.
Homestead purple verbena is one of the showiest flowers. Against a backdrop of green fields and wooden sheds, the scene looks like an oil painting.
