Rare trees hoping to find a home

IN the China Pavilion, a "green blanket" of Chinese yews will be shown in an exhibition of rare plants.

These Chinese yews have been provided by Shanghai Xinyuanlin Company of Minhang District.

A very ancient tree species, the Chinese yew has 11 different varieties found all over the world. In China there are four.

In the natural environment, it takes the tree 10 years to grow just 1 centimeter. In 1994, it was listed in the national rare wild plants at level one.

It looks like common cypress, but it's not so common in function.

Not only can it absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen from day to night, it can also absorb 90 percent of indoor formaldehyde, which makes it a very practical indoor air cleaner, very suitable to be put into residences.

Shanghai Xinyuanlin Company brings these Chinese yews of top quality from the famous Hongdou Group which cultivates the southern Chinese yews.

They hope that through the Expo, more and more people will pay attention to this rare and healthy plant, realize its function and incorporate it in their homes.
