Reading room named for its benefactor
A reading room called Song De Shu Yuan recently opened in Pujiang Town in the Minhang District.
The venue is different from other reading rooms because all of its books are donated by local volunteers.
In a month before its opening, 800 books were collected - a third of them from a volunteer named Pan Songde. To honor the donation, the reading room was named after him.
"I made the donation to foster a new channel for local residents to gain more knowledge," Pan said. "I've encouraged my friends to join me and increase the size of the collection."
Pan, a former professor of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, also has volunteered as a speaker for a local grassroots lecture program in Pujiang, where he resides.
"It's an honor for me," Pan said.
"I will continue to do anything I can to raise cultural awareness in the area."
The reading room is free to the public. Its initial collection contains notations in each book about the donor. Some of the books come from the private collections of members of the Chinese Writers Association.
The government has been actively encouraging residents to contribute to the cultural development of the area.
