Resident's knitting skills lead to business success
A RESIDENT of Shuiqingsan Neighborhood named Mao Jingfang recently created several beautiful artworks of hooked-needle-knitting filled with Expo elements -- pictures, pendants and ornaments.
Mao and her "Xingzhuang Knitting Craft Studio" are targeting a bigger market and they're doing very well.
When Mao was just seven or eight years old, she began to help her mother knit clothes. At that time, like most other Xingzhuang families, they made a living by knitting.
In 1979, Xingzhuang Town opened a "Shanghai Xingzhuang Knitting Factory" to offer jobs for youths, and Mao worked in the factory.
With hard work and excellent skills, she was promoted from an ordinary technology worker to an engineer in 20 years, even getting the opportunity to study abroad.
But in 1998, the factory suffered a big loss and many workers lost their job, Mao included.
With over 20 years' knitting experience, Mao decided to start her own business.
Every start-up has its own difficulty and so did Mao.
She had to keep designing new products and promoting them to potential clients.
At the beginning, she could just make some tiny crafts since she did not have enough facilities to make big ones.
But after a few years' effort, Mao established "Xingzhuang Knitting Craft Studio" with a lot of regular clients.
Now, Mao has not only the studio but also a production network of over 1,000 people.
Her products are made at dozens of working centers in Xingzhuang, Qibao, and other provinces including Anhui, Henan and Shandong.
Because of the good quality and design, some foreign trading companies also deal with her and now the products are selling in the United Kindom, the United States, France, Spain and Japan and production is valued up to 5 million yuan (US$732,535).
