Retiree to learn music
Zhang Ruyan, a retiree from the Luoyang neighborhood who loves music, has passed the qualifying test for entry into advanced cultural classes held at the Meilong Community School.
“I love music very much,” said Zhang. “I took some basic music classes before, but now I will enter a more advanced level.”
Two hundred applicants took the tests for enrollment in advanced classes, including Chinese traditional opera, photography, painting, fashion, recitation and music. Eighty passed.
Another entrant is Ping Guiqin, who will study Hu opera in the advanced classes. That will enable her to participate in performances staged in the community on the last Thursday of every month.
“The monthly performances allow class members to showcase their talents,” Ping said.
Founded in 2005, the Meilong Community School has become so popular that it started the qualification exams this year for places in advanced classes. The school now conducts 200 cultural classes at all levels for students of all ages. It has attracted more than 30,000 students. Annual fees range from 100 yuan (US$16.39) to 1,000 yuan.
“With more and more students interested in cultural pursuits and with different levels of talent, we have added advanced sessions to our curriculum of basic classes,” said a teacher at the school. “This allows people with serious interests to pursue their cultural passions at a higher level.”
