Roadway nightmare: potholes and trucks

RESIDENTS of Yongfeng Village in Pujiang Town are unhappy about the damage to their main road inflicted by heavy trucks. It’s been a problem for years.

One villager surnamed Xu recently lodged a formal complaint about the situation on a government hotline.

“When the weather is good, dust from Yongnan Road chokes the air,” Xu said. “When it rains, mud splashes everywhere when a truck passes. All we are asking for is a smooth road.”

Villagers said the ragged roadway, which is 10 meters wide, is especially dangerous at night because streetlights are malfunctioning.

Trucks using the road flash their high beams at night, disturbing local residents and caused danger to other drivers.

“Some of the potholes in the road are 10 centimeters deep and there is one almost every 100 meters,” said Xu. “It feels like riding a rollercoaster when I take the bus.”

The road is clearly marked with signs prohibiting oversize vehicles, but truckers simply ignore them. And no traffic police are there to take actions.

“There are several loading docks nearby used for cement materials, so giant mixer trucks come and go all the time,” said Xu.

Attempts to repair the road have been futile.

“All the potholes come back just days, or even just a day, after repair work is finished,” he said. “It was never truly solved.”

The Pujiang Town government has promised to overhaul the road next January, and the investment would be more than 10 million yuan (US$1.49 million) but villages are skeptical.

“I think the ultimate solution is to move the loading docks away from the village,” said Xu.
