Science students light up tunnels with innovation
TWO undergraduates at Shanghai Electricity University have come up with an innovative new way to illuminate tunnels that saves money and energy.
Designers Cai Renbing and Chen Fuzhong came up with the idea while studying electronic communication engineering at the university.
When Cai was in his first year, he visited Tibet and saw road tunnels lit constantly despite light traffic.
So he and his friend worked to design a system linking the lights with an induction device on the ground.
When cars drive into the tunnel, the electronic induction system turns on the lights, which will be turned off automatically after the cars pass.
According to Cai and Chen, the lighting system will save electricity. Their project has been chosen as the city's top university technology innovation project.
Officials from central China have expressed interest in the project.
