Science technology institute opens

A NEW high-tech research institute aimed at accelerating Shanghai's science and technology development has been set up in Minhang District, which is expected to become another industrial center of the Yangtze Delta region.

Located in Minhang Campus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and occupying an area of about 40 hectares, the Shanghai Zizhu New Industrial Technology Research Institute was established on January 12.

It will mainly focus on four fields -- new energy, modern mechanisms and new materials, digital photoelectric technology and medical treatment.

Since the global financial storm in 2008 strongly hit the world's economy, Shanghai has been insisting on pushing through industrial structure adjustment to cope with the crisis.

And throughout the entire process, the innovation of science technology plays a very important role.

Now, the foundation of Shanghai Zizhu New Industrial Technology Research Institute shows a very clear path of how to combine economy with high technology.

"We (Jiao Tong University) want to carry forward the cooperation among local production industry, technology research and higher education," said Ma Dexiu, an official of Jiao Tong University.

"The new research institute will take advantage of all kinds of innovative elements and make efforts to help push on the industrial structure adjustment and attract more qualified professionals."

Li Jie, a doctor from University of Cincinnati, is the president of the new institute, who was attracted back to China by the "Thousand Talents Plan" of the CPC Central Committee.

"The new institute will be focused on some comprehensive technology services which 'enterprises fail to do, VC dare not do and government can't do'," said Li.

"We'll make efforts to solve the problems on current 'key technology' and 'bottleneck technology'."

"The institute will collect resources from government, enterprises and universities, gather talents of world level, and try to become another industrial center of the Yangtze Delta," he added.

There are many successful examples of industrial technology research institutes all over the world, such as the Academy of Industrial Science Technology in Japan and Research Institute of Applied Science in the Netherlands. All these institutes meet different needs and take different responsibilities.

While in Shanghai, though new science research results and achievements keep coming out, these advantages in science have not been transformed into economic advantages.

The problem of "combining science technology and economy" still exists, and it's still a challenge that many high-tech zones all over the nation are faced with.
