Senior bides his time producing an area guide to help Expo visitors
EXPO Volunteer Service Stations, so-called "Colorful Hearts," can be found all over the city. And at the stations, there are plenty of items that help volunteers: the Expo Traffic Guide, medical kit and Expo Site Guide Map.
In one of the "Colorful Hearts" in the southern plaza of Xinzhuang Metro Station, volunteers have got one more aid: the Traffic Guide of Xinzhuang Area.
However, it's not provided by the government or the Expo organizer, but crafted by a registered Expo volunteer of Minhang District, Ru Shunlong, who is over 70 years old.
Last year, he proposed himself as an Expo volunteer on the Internet and was successful. At the time, he was not allocated an assignment but he was inspired when someone asked for directions one day.
"Xinzhuang is a very important traffic hub of Minhang District, and there must be many Expo visitors traveling through here. I thought if there's a traffic guide telling people how to get the right buses, it'll definitely be very helpful," he explains.
So he flew into action and with his Nikon DSLR, he rode his electric moped for about two months, taking thousands of pictures of over 120 bus stops in Xinzhuang area.
Traffic guide
After some photos and word processing, a very complete traffic guide is the result. Considering Ru's age, the administration eventually assigned him to the back-up team of volunteers instead of putting him actively on the job.
But the old man thinks that, although he cannot serve the Expo immediately, his traffic guide can.
So, he took the guide to the volunteer service station of Xinzhuang Metro Station's southern plaza, which has a great passenger flow.
Ru hopes that in such a key station, his guide can help volunteers with another resource when someone has traffic problems.
Although he's a back-up in the volunteer team, Ru didn't expect to do nothing with the volunteer title.
So far, he has already taken part in a patrol mission around 22 volunteer service stations in Xinzhuang Town, Meilong Town, Xinzhuang Industrial Zone and Gumei Street.
Every day, he rides his electric moped and carries his camera, traveling the district, just as he did when making the guide.
"But I still want to serve in the volunteer service station," says Ru, not satisfied with his current status. "I've applied for a position in the service station. Probably I'll work there for a couple of days."
