Shake off winter doldrums with some exercise
REMAINING dormant indoors this winter can cause seasonal cabin fever and that feeling of being off-stride. It's time to throw off the duvet and get out to give your body some needed exercise.
The middle-aged dance, seniors practice tai chi and youngsters roller skate. When you step into the Minhang Sports Park, the first sports-themed complex in Shanghai, you will find it is hard to remain immobile amid so much enthusiastic activity.
The 840,000-square-meter park is dotted with a wide variety of sports facilities and greenery. It is home to the Minhang Sports Stadium, covering 133,433 square meters, and the famous Dino Beach. There are courts for basketball, table tennis, badminton, tennis and gate-ball, as well as an indoor swimming pool.
In short, there's something for everyone: flying kites, biking, running, fishing and even yachting are popular activities in the park. Bathed in winter sunshine, fresh air and even some hard-earned sweat, you will find the park a pepper-upper as winter envelops the outdoors.
Light and soft sports, such as jogging, biking and tai chi are particularly suitable this time of year, while only the hardy should attempt more strenuous activities such as basketball and soccer. It's always advisable to do a few warm-up exercises.
As the biggest urban green area in southwest Shanghai, the park boasts a central lake of over 75,000 square meters and a 6,040-square-meter wetland ecological garden. Greenery accounts for about 35 percent of the whole park area.
The Minhang Sports Park complex is linked by 18 bridges. Admission to the park is free, while some facilities, such as the swimming pool and badminton and tennis courts, charge modest fees.
The park was opened to the public in January, 2004, as part of efforts to improve the health and well-being of urban residents.
