Shop signs breach language rules
LANGUAGE watchdogs have found a large number of nonstandard foreign language shop signs in a recent spot check.
Shop signs with only foreign characters violate the Law of Standard Spoken and Written Chinese Language, officials said.
The law stipulates shop signs must have Chinese characters.
A great number of shop signs with only Japanese and Korean characters were found in Hongqiao and Longbai areas in Minhang District.
Offending shop owners were asked to take corrective measures.
The Chinese shop signs mostly conformed to the standards.
Minhang District aims to achieve 90 percent of signs written in standard Chinese language by the end of the year. More than 6,000 university students have been invited to monitor public signs.
The district's Language Work Committee also welcomes public tips on nonstandard signs by emailing mhyywz@mhedu.sh.cn.
