Shuttle buses high on list of priorities
Additional shuttle buses connecting Metro stations and neighborhoods are scheduled to go into operation this year to give Minhang District residents improved transport convenience.
Shuttle buses will cover major portions of the district.
With population growing and more Metro lines reaching the district, the lack of adequate connecting services has caused headaches for local residents.
Pujiang Town is one typical example. People have flooded into the area from downtown in recent years because of urban renewal relocation programs.
Metro Line 8 is the only available mass transit service at present, with the Pujiang Station at the center of town. But neighborhoods have stretched far into outlying areas, forcing people to walk more than one kilometer to reach the subway. Many residents can’t afford cars; the Metro is their only transit lifeline.
Only transit lifeline
“At first, the town was settled mostly by people relocated from the 2010 World Expo site, and since they were in central areas of Pujiang, there was no problem,” said Victor Liang, who moved to the town last year. “But now people like me have to walk at least 20 minutes to reach the station every day.”
In late December, the Pujiang No. 9 bus went into operation. It connects the Metro station with the Lianmincun neighborhood.
“The bus runs every 20 minutes, but it’s better than nothing,” said Liang.
This year, two new bus routes will be added in Pujiang, Maqiao and Zhuanqiao areas, while the routes of another six will be altered to accommodate more neighborhoods. The Minhang District Urban and Rural Construction and Transport Commission said the routes will reach newly built housing and shopping areas.
New Metro lines
In the next two years, Minhang will be connected to Shanghai’s downtown and outlying suburbs by new Metro lines, elevated roads and bus routes.
The third phase of Metro Line 8 will add six new stations from Shendu Highway to Huizhen Road. It is expected to be put into operation at the end of next year. Supporting bus routes along the line are in the planning stage, the commission said.
“Doing big transport projects, like Metro line construction, is aimed at delivering greater convenience to the public,” said a commission official who preferred not to be identified. “We have to look at all the practical problems because they won’t go away by themselves. Our aim is to extend public transport to every neighborhood and village.”
