Small business gets big earful

MINHANG hosted a series of forums and training sessions to assist small- and medium-sized companies grow and prosper.

The 17 sessions offered advice and help with policy formulation, financing, innovation, business strategies, talent recruitment and patent transfer.

Sponsor of the event was the Enterprise Service Center under the auspices of the district's economic committee. All sessions were free of charge.

During a forum on innovation in the software industry, the service center signed an agreement with the Shanghai Development Center of Computer Software Technology and the Shanghai branch of the Software Incubator of the National 863 Program to pool resources and services to help smaller industries in Minhang.

That event was attended by academics, industry professionals and representatives from software companies.

In another seminar on trademark management and strategies, hosted by the Wujing Town government, representatives from more than 30 smaller companies received financial guidance from a team from the Bank of China and from management experts.

A representative from Shanghai Guangwei Electric & Tools Co, a Minhang-based business, told the seminar that his company has applied for loans many times but had always been rejected.

Many banks prefer to lend to high-tech companies, leaving other firms scratching for capital, complained the representative, who declined to be identified.

The officials from the Bank of China said they would dispatch a professional team to visit the company and reassess its funding needs.

Several representatives from other companies said the forum had been helpful in identifying other sources of capital.

One symposium hosted at the Cangyuan Science Park brought together experts in the fields of law, insurance, finance, tax and information technology to provide one-stop advice for smaller businesses facing problems.

The events were part of a Shanghai-wide campaign to assist the development of small- and medium-sized businesses.
