Smoke alarms installed in old homes to save lives
The Minhang Fire Brigade said 87 older apartments in Minhang have been outfitted with advanced smoke detectors and alarm systems this month, and eight of them were used to report fires.
An elderly woman surnamed Xu, who lived in a neighborhood on Jiangchuan Road, fell asleep when waiting for her soup to cook on the stove.
She was awakened by a loud alarm, only to find that the kitchen was full of smoke and the pot had been burnt black.
“If the alarm hadn’t sounded when it did, it could have been a serious, even fatal fire,” she said.
The fire brigade said about 43 percent of the fires in the last three years have involved older apartments, prompting a program to install smoke detectors.
The alarms are connected through Wi-Fi. When the detector in one apartment is activated, alarms in all residential units of a building go off, allowing occupants to evacuate safely.
The system also alerts the offices of neighborhood security guards and the mobile phones of all family members.
This is the first time that such advanced detectors and alarm systems have been installed in Shanghai residential areas. They will be expanded district-wide, the Minhang Fire Brigade said.
