Snitchers, beware!

MINHANG District horticultural authorities remind residents that it's unwise to eat fruit picked from street-side trees because of possible pesticide contamination.

Tangerine trees planted near Minhang Stadium had been picked bare by passers-by, leaving what should be a panoply of golden hue just green leaves.

A small persimmon grove nearby is lucky enough to still have some unripe fruit hanging above arm's reach.

Xinzhuang Park officials posted signs warning visitors that plum trees there had recently been sprayed with pesticides, but it did little to allay fruit snitchers.

The Minhang District Forest Administrative Office said even if street-side trees have not been sprayed, the fruits shouldn't be eaten.

"Edible fruits are planted according to strict safety codes," said Huang Weiming, deputy director of the office. "But street-side trees are laced with automobile exhaust and other pollution. People who pick these fruits not only damage public scenery but also may damage their own health."
