Some of the best in China
BAO Meili, the founder of Happy House in Hongqiao Town, and Qiao Qing, a Minhang District policeman much beloved by local residents, won spots on the list of "the best people in China" recently.
The vote for designees is held once a month by the Civilization Office of the Central Communist Party Committee.
Bao was honored as a "dedicated person," while Qiao was designated a "righteous and courageous person."
Both had received certificates from the state government.
Bao's Happy House helps local residents to learn music, enhancing the bond among neighbors.
"I'm so happy to bring warmth and care to every corner of the community," Bao said. "I was diagnosed with cancer after retirement, but I didn't give up on life."
Bao's example has spawned other organizations patterned on the Happy House concept. There are 18 now in the Minhang District.
Qiao works out of the Bijiang Road Police Station. During a holiday, he ran across some blackmailers and was injured when six of them beat him up as he tried to make an arrest.
As he was rushed to hospital, Qiao had no thought for his own injuries, urging that the criminals be caught. They were, several hours later.
