Souvenir china tea set a smash hit in contest
A china tea set designed by a Minhang company was second runner-up in a national travel souvenirs competition.
It was the second time the district won an award in the four-year-old competition.
The tea set, called "A Hundred Years of the Bund," contains 15 pieces, including cups, saucers, spoons and a teapot. It is embossed with classic images of the Bund, drawn in gold foil against a white background.
The tea set was praised by the judges for its high quality in commemorating a significant part of Shanghai's heritage.
Shanghai Gaocheng Artistic Package Co in Zhuanqiao Town, which designed the tea set, said it hasn't been mass produced for sale yet, but the company hopes to become a major player in the souvenir market. "There is no leading brand in the travel souvenir market today," said Cai Shishan, general manager of the company. "We believe that winning awards is an important step forward for us."
The company said it hopes to apply the patterns used in "A Hundred Years of the Bund" to other souvenir items.
The Minhang District government said it wants to encourage companies to enter the souvenir market. This year, Gaocheng Artistic won government approval for a research and development center in Zhuanqiao Town.
The Shanghai Tourism Administration said most souvenir producers in the country lack good market intelligence and don't understand that most tourists want to buy souvenirs that are portable and practical, with a refined design to remind them of their holiday.
