Spring Festival shopping a golden time for some

THE Friendship Shopping Center and the nearby South Brilliance Shopping Mall reported a sales worth 51.72 million yuan (US$7.6 million) for the Spring Festival golden week, the fourth highest of the city's shopping centers.

The report from the Minhang Economic and Trade Committee shows that in the seven-day holiday, the district's 21 main shopping complexes had a sales of 153 million yuan, a small drop compared with the same period last year.

The Famos Shopping Mall in Qibao Town kept its sales momentum during the festival. Its Taiwan Snack Fete in its central square attracted millions of tourists and food lovers.

"The snack festival enticed flocks of city dwellers from downtown and helped boost sales for the shopping center," said the mall's Chen Peiqi. Famos's seven-day turnover hit 5.1 million yuan, a 4.3 percent year-on-year increase.

The economic report also revealed that 12 large-scale restaurants enjoyed a 1.1-million-yuan turnover, still climbing despite the current financial downturn, while construction and decoration market sales remained in a slump.

Household appliances sold well during the holiday. During the Spring Festival, the turnover of the district's electrical appliances market increased by 7.23 percent. And in the New Year holiday, the number hit 30.58 million yuan, a 20 percent jump.

Suning Appliance, a domestic chain retailer of home appliances, opened a flagship store on Qixin Road, the sixth outlet in the district.

However some supermarkets suffered a big drop in Spring Festival trading. The sales volume of Minhang's 17 supermarkets including Tesco, NGS, Metro, Carrefour and others was only124 million yuan, a 7.44 percent decrease.
