Spring Festival support for needy families
THE gift of giving abounds in Minhang District as charity organizations prepare to deliver some holiday spirit to needy people this Spring Festival. The Lunar New Year falls on February 3.
The annual charity event "True Love Under the Blue Sky" was held in Minhang on January 8. More than 1,200 volunteers from 13 middle schools and two universities in the district went to the streets and business areas to collect public donations.
The one-day canvas drew more than 87,000 yuan (US$13,214) in donations. The money will be dispersed among needy families before Spring Festival.
"We are grateful to those who open their hearts and pocketbooks to the district's charity programs," said Wu Shenyao, chairman of the Minhang Branch of the Shanghai Charity Foundation.
More than 2,800 companies and over 40,000 individuals in the district have donated 108 million yuan since last August when the branch put out a call for help.
At a ceremony marking the 15th anniversary of the branch late last month, 16 individuals and six companies were honored for their charitable contributions.
Among them was Shi Xiulan, a resident of the Jiangchuan community, who has donated 200,000 yuan in the past 10 years and helped more than 200 people. She has helped arrange accommodation for poor out-of-town people who came to the city for medical treatment and personally done their housework and cooking.
"My efforts are small and not worth mentioning," Shi said humbly. "It's rewarding to help people and I plan to continue that."
Qu Jinshou, another honoree, has knitted more than 400 sweaters for the needy.
Zhu Honglin, an 82-year-old man, won commendation for donating 20,000 yuan to victims of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake in Sichuan Province. He has also contributed money to Project Hope, which helps pay for the education of poor children.
