State gifts collection in museum show
AN exhibition of 122 state gifts have been on display in Minhang Museum since September 22.
The show, featuring porcelain, glassware, jade and embroidery, is jointly presented by Minhang Museum and International Friendship Museum in Beijing.
The gifts were given by foreign government leaders over the past 60 years, many of them to signify historical occasions.
A featured silver inscription plate was presented to former Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping when former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher visited China in 1984 to mark the return of Hong Kong to the People's Republic of China.
A crystal glass pot was the state gift from the Prime Minister of Portugal to the then Chinese President Li Xiannian in 1987 to mark the return of Macau. "Porcelain Swan" was presented by President Nixon to former Premier Zhou Enlai in 1972.
The swan, made by the American Boehm Porcelain Studio, joined "forces" to break the ice between China and the United States.
A fine copper tea set was given by Zambia President Kenneth Kaunda to Chairman Mao Zedong in 1974. The Tanzania-Zambia railway, under construction at the time, was one of China's largest foreign aid projects.
During the meeting, Chairman Mao introduced his historic "three worlds" diplomatic theory.
The rare and historic exhibition at Minhang Museum will open from September 21 to October 28 with free admission.
